A Shepherd Who Knew His People: Archdiocese of Bangalore Bids Farewell to Rev. Fr. Lawrence Noronha

The Archdiocese of Bangalore bid a heartfelt and grateful farewell to Rev. Fr. Lawrence Noronha, a stalwart priest whose life and ministry became deeply woven into the history of the Archdiocese. One of the few priests who came from Mangalore to serve the Church in Bangalore, Fr. Lawrence was the last priest to carry this special legacy. For many years, he served faithfully in different parishes and institutions, giving himself generously wherever the Church needed him. Simple, dedicated and deeply committed to his priestly vocation, he remained faithful to God and His people throughout his ministry. His priesthood was not about seeking recognition, but about quietly being available whenever and wherever he was needed.

Most Rev. Dr. Peter Machado, Archbishop of Bangalore, in his homily, beautifully reflected on Psalm 23 and described Fr. Lawrence as a shepherd who truly knew his sheep and led them towards green pastures. The Archbishop recalled with gratitude the enormous contribution Fr. Lawrence made to the Archdiocese and to the many people he served. Affectionately known as the “walking GPS,” Fr. Lawrence seemed to know every parish, institution, road and place connected with the Church. But his remarkable memory was not merely about knowing places; he knew people. He remembered families, priests, parishes and countless stories. Archbishop Peter expressed his heartfelt gratitude for Fr. Lawrence’s long and faithful service, acknowledging the many years he had generously given to the Archdiocese. As the Archbishop said in reflecting on the Good Shepherd, Fr. Lawrence was a priest who knew his faithful, accompanied them and helped lead them towards the green pastures of faith.

In the Eulogy, Rev. Dr. Cyril Victor Joseph recalled the spirit of St. Lawrence, the patron saint of Fr. Lawrence. He reflected that Fr. Lawrence seemed to live the words: “Send me anywhere, give me any work, and I will go and do the work of God.” Wherever he was sent, he went; whatever work was entrusted to him, he accepted. Fr. Cyril poignantly observed that Fr. Lawrence carried the maps of the Archdiocese in his own memory and said that with his passing, the Archdiocese has lost not merely a priest, but one of its precious living repositories of memory, history and pastoral experience. On behalf of the Archdiocese, Fr. Cyril conveyed heartfelt condolences to Fr. Lawrence’s family and expressed deep gratitude for his dedicated priestly service.

Most Rev. Dr. Bernard Moras, Archbishop Emeritus of Bangalore, also paid tribute to Fr. Lawrence and thanked him for his faithful service to the Archdiocese. He recalled a remarkable chapter of Fr. Lawrence’s priestly journey: he was the only priest who served under every Archbishop of Bangalore, beginning with Archbishop Thomas Pothacamury and continuing until the present Archbishop. Present at the farewell were Most Rev. Dr. Peter Machado, Most Rev. Dr. Bernard Moras, Rt. Rev. Arockiaraj Satis Kumar and Rt. Rev. Joseph Susainathan, along with many priests who concelebrated the Requiem Mass. Their presence, together with the large gathering of faithful from across the Archdiocese, became a beautiful expression of gratitude for a priest whose life had touched generations.

Even after his retirement from active pastoral ministry, Fr. Lawrence continued to give himself to the Church. For 19 years, he served as a Spiritual Director to young seminarians, accompanying them during an important and formative stage of their journey towards priesthood. With his experience, wisdom, patience and deep love for the priesthood, he helped young men discern their vocation, encouraged them in moments of uncertainty and guided them to grow in prayer, discipline and commitment. He nurtured vocations not merely through words, but through his own example of faithful priestly living. For many seminarians, he became a trusted guide and fatherly presence whose advice and encouragement remained deeply meaningful.

The Requiem Mass was therefore not simply a moment of mourning, but a celebration of a life given generously to God and His Church. Priests, bishops and faithful from different parts of the Archdiocese came to offer their prayers and pay their final homage. They came with memories, gratitude and one final “thank you” to a priest who had walked with them through the years. Fr. Lawrence knew the roads of the Archdiocese, but more importantly, he knew the people who travelled those roads. Now, the man who spent his life helping others find their way has completed his earthly journey. We entrust him to the Good Shepherd whom he served so faithfully, with the words of Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.” May the Lord now lead His faithful servant to the green pastures of eternal life. Farewell, Fr. Lawrence. Thank you for your faithful service, your generous priesthood, your guidance to generations of seminarians, and for being a shepherd who always knew the way home.
