The Archdiocese of Bangalore, known for its rich spiritual heritage and commitment to faith formation, successfully conducted its Annual Catechism Examinations, reaffirming the Church’s dedication to nurturing young minds in Christian values and doctrine.

Bengaluru, a city recognised for its interfaith harmony, has long been a centre of vibrant Catholic life. Rooted in the Word of God and strengthened through pastoral care, the Archdiocese continues to place catechetical instruction at the heart of its evangelising mission. Catechism, which bridges Sacred Scripture and daily Christian living, remains a key instrument in forming children to grow as responsible and faith-filled members of society.

The examinations were organised by the Faith Formation Commission of the Archdiocese, which oversees catechetical activities across Catholic parishes and institutions. The Commission functions under the leadership of Rev. Fr Arun Kumar, Secretary, Rev. Fr Robin, Joint Secretary, along with its committed core committee members. Their efforts ensure that systematic catechism instruction is carried out alongside regular academic programmes in Catholic institutions.

As part of diocesan guidelines, every Catholic institution dedicates at least one hour each week to catechism instruction. The Commission also regularly monitors assessments and conducts orientation programmes for parish, school, and college catechism teachers. Other responsibilities include the preparation and distribution of catechism manuals, setting of examination question papers, and the organisation of biannual examinations.

This year, the diocesan-level catechism examinations were held at the Archbishop’s House, with the participation of over 115 Catholic schools and more than 450 students. The programme began with prayer and an inspiring message from Most Rev. Dr. Peter Machado, Archbishop of Bangalore who encouraged the students to deepen their faith and live out Gospel values in their daily lives. The examinations were conducted for school toppers in halls designated for the purpose, ensuring a smooth and disciplined process. Evaluation of answer scripts was carried out immediately after the examinations by the core committee members.

The Faith Formation Commission currently serves more than 125 Catholic institutions, particularly schools and pre-university colleges, across the city. The catechetical academic year begins in June and concludes in February, culminating in the celebration of the Annual Catechism Day, which honours outstanding student achievers and recognises excellence in faith formation.
The Annual Catechism Day for this academic year will be observed on 1 February 2026, marking the successful completion of another year of structured catechetical learning. Through initiatives such as the Annual Catechism Examinations, the Archdiocese of Bengaluru continues to uphold its mission of forming young Catholics who are grounded in faith, guided by hope, and inspired to witness Christ’s love in society.
